“Hills Like White Elephants"
Extract one passage and connect it to a theme introduced in class today. Total of 2 paragraphs (concrete examples, in-text citation)
He picked up the two heavy bags and carried them around the station to the other tracks. He looked up the tracks but could not see the train. Coming back, he walked through the bar-room, where people waiting for the train were drinking. He drank an Anis at the bar and looked at the people. They were all waiting reasonably for the train. He went out through the bead curtain. She was sitting at the table and smiled at him. ‘Do you feel better?’ he asked. ‘I feel fine,’ she said. ‘There’s nothing wrong with me. I feel fine.’ Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway, last paragraph.
Life at a cross road, this theme is attached to the short story; Hills Like White Elephants. The train mentioned in the above passage is analogous to the decision making process faced by the main characters. The female is pregnant and they are at a crossroads, with termination of pregnancy on one side and keeping the child on one side but the decisions still isn’t made and the male wants it to be made and wants it to be a termination. This is analogous because the train can be compared to the decision. The man wants to get on it to go to his desired destination which can be compared to going to get the abortion procedure done, so he is eager and can’t wait to see the train. While the lady is still sitting down at the bar she is not eager to board the train just like she is not eager to go through the abortion process and would seemingly rather not board the train subsequently compared to making the decision not to have the abortion.
We face dilemmas everyday as human beings. So decisions are tough and the outcome going down one road of the crossroads are very life altering and this would also be the case if your decision went down an alternative route. One example is this: breast cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers among females. In some cases they are face with the decision of amputating there breast, which is a symbol of femininity and pride. This is a crossroads decision that life has brought your way. You can amputate the breast and be a woman without a breast with a better chance of recovering from the cancer, in most cases and the next option is keep the symbol of femininity, attraction and pride and try to fight it relying on chemo or surgically removing your breast. Either of these decisions will change your life forever.
